ABOUT DRILL: HISTORY

Drill Team Hawaii and the First Priority drill teams have long been
established at St. Andrew's Priory school for
girls. The First
Priority drill team began in 1972 under the direction of Penny
Young. At that time there were 16 high school girls, all from
the Priory.
Not long after the high school team was established the younger girls at the school began asking for a team. Girls from other schools also began inquiring and were allowed to tryout and join. Drill Team Hawaii was then reestablished for girls from all schools. Both teams still reside at the Priory and have girls from the Priory and other schools. Girls begin on the team as early as five years old and often continue until they become members of the First Priority high school team and graduate from school. Often a college age group performs with the team on special events. Many graduating girls have gone on to dance as Rainbow Dancers, HPU Dancers, Utah Jazz Dancers, Sonic Dancers and many other university and professional dance groups. Some of these girls have become dance teachers with their own groups. The drill teams perform throughout the state at various scholastic events such as during half times for UH, BYU and HPU athletics. They have performed several times when the LA Lakers came to town. Performances for various community service groups are a yearly event as well as Christmas shows in hotels and shopping centers. Each year the team hosts a year-end showcase where all girls are spotlighted in a magnificent show. The team travels to the mainland every other year or when opportunities arise. The team has performed on national television for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and the Rose Bowl parade. In 1993 several girls were on the Ed McMahon Star Search. Girls on the team have competed and placed first in many national and international competitions from California to Florida as well as Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The girls spend much time together and thanks to a wonderful parent support group the team functions smoothly. Girls are taught the value of each other, the value of the talent they have been blessed with, appreciation for those who share their talents and make this opportunity possible for them. Under the direction of Mrs. Penny Young and her daughter Febray Kaopua, the First Priority was founded 27 years ago with 16 girls. Drill Team Hawaii was established eight years later. Today Drill Team Hawaii and First Priority are made up of 93 dedicated girls from various public and private schools on Oahu. Practice is held year-round at St. Andrew's Priory school in downtown Honolulu. |
