The Juniors were as graceful as ever

During April 22-23, 2006, 80 dancers from Drill Team Hawaii traveled to Los Angeles, California to compete in the Starlight Productions dance competition. The only representative from the islands, Drill Team Hawaii won 11 of the 14 categories entered. Drill Team Hawaii also took top honors in four overall categories, including first and second in the high school overall competition.

"The other teams had exceptional dancers," said co-director Penny Young. "As we met our fellow competitors, we appreciated their ability and showmanship and wondered if this competition was just over our heads. However, the judges complemented our technique and noted on our scoresheets that we 'danced with our hearts and did it with great class.'"

Drill Team Hawaii is a performance dance team that blends award-winning choreography, precision dance techniques, and gymnastics skills for an exciting and entertaining experience. Founded by Penny Young in 1973, Drill Team Hawaii is presently comprised of 84 girls from various schools around Oahu. With co-director Febray Kaopua, Drill Team Hawaii performs regularly at local sporting and variety events including UH football games.

Going beyond just performances and competitions, Drill Team Hawaii emphasizes self-esteem, confidence, responsibility, and leadership. Most importantly, Drill Team Hawaii teaches the girls to strive to do their best.
